Om Shala Yoga

Shawn Green

I believe yoga is for everyone.  Young, old, strong, weak, healthy and sick. To paraphrase Krishnamacharya, not every asana, nor every version of asana is right for each person.  A teacher must take into consideration the students circumstances - their age, profession, health, genetic factors, natural aptitude and commitment to practice.  I believe being mindful of this is the most effective way to serve the uniqueness of each student.  Central to this is the customization of poses for each student.  My class room may look different from a typical one but I’ve found it to be quite amazing at the changes it can bring about in the students.  I teach with an attention to detail, building poses from the ground up and adjusting students with props, verbal cues and hands on assistance.  I believe the discipline and the philosophy of yoga is one and the same and strive to understand how I can apply some of the most core philosophy teachings into my asana practice, each day I step on the mat.

I’m a 25 year Humboldt County resident and when I am not on the road sharing and studying yoga I make my home in Arcata California where I am the owner and steward of Om Shala Yoga. I teach Ashtanga Vinyasa as it was taught to me by my teacher David Garrigues, one of the few American teachers certified by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. I completed my 200 ryt training at Om Shala in 2020 and went on to travel and study with David Garrigues ever since then, logging hundreds of workshop hours with him both online and in person. My apprenticeship began with him in 2024 and is on-going.  It is with great pride that I am able to pursue my studies within this parampara and contribute to the living and contemporary lineage of Ashtanga Yoga.
